An office worker was made redundant by Donabate Golf Club when the club’s bank, who had been backing them following financial difficulties, said that the club needed one more redundancy after the club had already laid off a number of staff.
Another member of staff, a bar manager, volunteered to take redundancy, but the club elected to make the Claimant, who had worked for the golf club for a number of years, redundant. She was offered her job back as a Consultant to work one day a week, which she rejected, as it would not be possible to do all of her work in one day.
The Equality Tribunal awarded the woman €24,000 under the Unfair Dismissals Act finding that no realistic alternatives were explored and unfair and flawed procedures were adopted.
