A Spanish Au Pair has recently been awarded €9,229 after the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) found that the family she worked for breached employment acts.
The Commission heard that she had been paid €100 per week plus board and lodgings and working approximately 27.5 hours per week, which did not equate to the minimum wage of €8.65 per hour.
The Commission awarded the Au Pair €3,829 in arrears of wages; €400 compensation for not being provided with a written statement of her terms and conditions, under the Terms of Employment Act and €5,000 in relation to annual leave entitlements.
This case is not an exception, with many au pairs working under illegal working conditions and as cheap labour and au pairs and families should make themselves fully aware of their rights and responsibilities.
